NAPA: “Grow Old Disgracefully”

NAPA’s “Grow Old Disgracefully” campaign, born from Jackie Flaherty’s transformative visit to a care home in 2009, challenges ageist stereotypes and promotes vibrant engagement among older adults. Partnering with the National Activity Providers Association (NAPA), this initiative encourages individuals to embrace positive ageing—prioritising quality of life and meaningful activities regardless of age.

Through diverse programs and events, the campaign promotes vitality and creativity among older adults, especially those in care settings. One standout initiative, the “Living The Dream” fund, enables individuals like Olive, an 87-year-old race enthusiast, to fulfil lifelong aspirations. Olive enjoyed a day at the races, thanks to NAPA, creating cherished memories.

Similarly, Bill Wall, a motorcycle enthusiast, rekindled his passion for riding with support from the fund and intergenerational connections facilitated by Ready Generations. His surprise motorcycle party at a care village showcased the power of connecting across generations.

NAPA’s advocacy for meaningful activity ensures access to opportunities promoting wellbeing, collaborating with care services and Activity Providers to create a society where ageing is celebrated. As NAPA continues to confront ageism, initiatives like “Grow Old Disgracefully” empower older adults to live their dreams and challenge societal expectations, promoting a culture of dignity, respect, and vitality.
