If you have a professional or personal interest in dementia, you’ll know that chances to share experiences and learn about good practice in care and support are so important to help those living with dementia to lead their best life.
The history of Dementia Community
At Dementia Community we aim to do just this under our motto of ‘learning, sharing and inspiring’. We were formed as a Charitable Community Benefit Society in 2021 to provide a model for sustaining the Journal of Dementia Care (a multi-disciplinary bi-monthly publication established over 30 years ago) and in response to the negative impact of the pandemic on dementia care in the UK.
Fast forward to 2024 and our growing membership has a worldwide reach, bringing together a diverse community of individuals and organisations, including people living with dementia, family carers, care providers and researchers from all health and care disciplines. Whatever your connection to or interest in dementia we welcome you, so please do consider joining us here: https://journalofdementiacare.co.uk/dementia-community-membership
Dementia Community’s co-production and equality, diversity and inclusion principles
We actively encourage co-production to improve everyone’s experience of dementia, in care and wider society, and we support a vision whereby all people affected by dementia feel informed and purposeful. One example of this is our forthcoming webinar – part of our autumn series – with the 3 Nations Dementia Working Group. Do keep an eye on our social media for when tickets (all free) become available for
this.
We are strongly committed to the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion, and seek to ensure that the voices of people from under-represented communities are heard. You can read more about our EDI focus in the Journal of Dementia Care edition entitled ‘Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: A special Issue’, available for free here: https://journalofdementiacare.co.uk/wpcontent/uploads/2023/10/JDCSEPT23.pdf
The benefits of our £1 lifelong membership
Our cooperative model provides lifelong membership for any individual or organisation that costs just £1 and provides a host of benefits. These include a
discounted subscription to the Journal of Dementia Care, reduced delegate prices for the UK Dementia Congress, a monthly newsletter and a discussion forum.
Through events like our regular webinars, we provide learning and networking opportunities that help to connect and empower our members, and we facilitate the community to respond to issues of interest and concern. We also provide a comprehensive compilation of dementia news and an extensive events listing on our website.
Share your examples of outstanding practice with us
We actively celebrate outstanding examples of best practice and innovation, and we look forward to celebrating these at our annual National Dementia Care Awards, now in their 14th year. With a host of categories to choose from, please do nominate colleagues and teams for these prestigious awards. You can find out more and nominate here.
